Hey there, fam! đź‘‹
I know it seems like everyone nowadays is always tired and that it's just the new norm lately, but that not true. There are very real root causes for constant fatigue which leads me to talk about something that's close to my heart - Nutritive Deficiencies. As black millennials, we face unique challenges when it comes to maintaining a healthy diet and getting all the essential nutrients our bodies need. But worry not, because in this blog, we'll explore the harmful effects of nutritive deficiencies and share some practical tips on how to overcome them.
First off, let's acknowledge that nutritive deficiencies can have a significant impact on our overall well-being. They can affect our:
Energy levels, ( you know how you’re always feeling tired even after a full nights rest?)
Cognitive function (yeah that terrible memory is not just you getting older, because we aren’t that old yet lol)
Even our mental health (mood swings or depressive feelings are not normal and yes even in todays time and all that’s going on in the world.)
It's crucial for us to understand the potential consequences and take proactive steps to address them.
So, how can we overcome these nutritive deficiencies? Here are a few tips to get us started:
Educate ourselves: Knowledge is power! Let's take the time to learn about the essential nutrients our bodies need and how they contribute to our health. Understanding the importance of a balanced diet will motivate us to make better food choices.
Eat a rainbow: Incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables into our meals. Different colors represent different nutrients, so aim for a colorful plate! From leafy greens to vibrant berries, let's embrace the diversity of nature's goodness. And remember the rainbow can come from bags, cans and fresh so don’t feel inadequate if you have to get yours in different forms.
Cook at home: We got food at da’ house!!! lol. Cooking our own meals gives us full control over the ingredients we use. It allows us to experiment with nutritious recipes and flavors that suit our taste buds and our culture. Plus, it's a great way to bond with our loved ones over a delicious and wholesome meal. Its a win win y’all.
Support local farmers: Seek out local farmers' markets or community-supported agriculture programs. By buying fresh, locally sourced produce, we not only support our local economy but also ensure that we're getting the highest quality and most nutrient-dense foods. There are usually a food pantry or foodshare local as well if you do your research.
Access Alternative Forms of Nutrients: Things like vitamin fortified foods and drinks ( like kombucha or protein shakes). High quality supplements are also an option, especially if your are not comfortable cooking or just do not have a schedule that accommodates it. We have to learn to mold our journey to our life and stop forcing habits that simply do not work for us in this time and space of our lives.
Stay hydrated: Water is life! Drinking an adequate amount of water throughout the day helps our bodies function optimally. Let's make it a habit to carry a reusable water bottle and stay hydrated wherever we go.
